What do we mean when we say the body is 'compensating'? We talk about muscle activation but sometimes we just cannot get a certain muscle to activate. This could be due to a number of reasons; injury, postural changes, or even repetitive movements.
Whatever the reason, the body will select one or more muscles to help with the activation. Usually, the smaller muscles that would normally help with the movement, the 'synergists', but sometimes it will recruit the 'stabilizers'.
Now the smaller muscles try to do the work of 'the big boys' and they overload!
If these changes are not dealt with early, there could be many compensations and finding the initial culprit becomes more difficult with time.
